Rapid Prototyping

There are many great reasons to make a prototype of your idea early on in the process.  Three of the main reasons we regularly prototype are to:

  • Understand: Prototyping can help us better understand the problem and can often lead to the root cause of the problem, the one you should really be solving
  • Communicate: They make the ideas in your head visible to other people, including your team, your stakeholders, users  and potential investores.  They transform fuzzy thoughts in your head, to physical or digital mediums.  If you don’t have a prototype, each person you speak to about your idea, will visualise it differently
  • Improve: Through testing your prototype with users early on, you can learn which features they may value, and more importantly which ones are of now value at all, allowing your build activities where it matters

2D Mock-ups

A 2D mock-ups can come in many forms, from low to high-fidelity.  One of the quickest and easiest ways to prototype a website or app is through the use of coloured paper, pen and scissors.

Using cardboard is a common technique in the design industry to make phsycial representation of their devices.  Dyson is famous for making full scale cardboard prototypes of all of their devices to test how people interact with it.
